Elegance Has Always Been in Style Even in Rugged Iceland

Updated: Feb 9, 2023

Interest in the traditional Icelandic costume grew considerably in the 19th century when the Icelandic eagerness for independence from Danish rule was gaining momentum.

The national costume (Þjóðbúning) turned out to be an effective tool for a nation with a growing sense of national identity. Thus, it became a symbol of Iceland’s strength and ability to stand independently.

In 2001, the Icelandic Minister of Education and Culture established the Þjóðbúningaráð (“The National Costume Board”). Its role is to conserve and pass on knowledge of the traditional costume and how it is made and to provide advice to anyone willing to learn and carry out the tradition.

Icelanders abroad take advantage of the 17th of June, Iceland’s independence day, to pull out their cherished attire that has often been handed down through the generations to wear and display at their local Icelandic clubs while celebrating from afar.

The same is true in Iceland. While downtown during the many celebrations on June 17th, you will spot Icelanders of all ages proudly strolling around in their beautiful costumes.

Pride of our nation is one thing that is not lacking in Iceland Here and Abroad.
